Great whales face new threat as Japan moves to scrap sanctuary
Article Abstract:
Japan is to propose the abandonment of the Southern Ocean whaling sanctuary at the International Whaling Commission meeting in Grenada in May 1999. Some 90% of the world's remaining largest whales live in this sanctuary, which was established in 1994 and covers 8 million sq miles of ocean around Antarctica. Anti-whaling campaigners are now becoming extremely concerned that Japan and Norway, the other main whaling country, may be successful in their efforts to have the moratorium on commercial whaling lifted.

The mountain of whale blubber Norway is hiding from the world
Article Abstract:
Norway has a stock of 500 tons of blubber from minke whales slaughtered in defiance of the international moratorium on commercial whaling which has been in effect since 1986. The blubber is being saved for a time when it may be legal to trade it with Japan, where blubber is eaten. Norway harpooned 624 minke whales in 1998, and this number is set to rise to 753 in 1999. The stockpiled blubber would sell at very high prices if traded with Japan, where it is regarded as a delicacy.
