Victims don't make art
Article Abstract:
Arlene Croce, dance critic of the 'New Yorker' magazine, recently refused to review dancer-choreographer Bill T. Jones' 'Still Here,' claiming that it could not be seen as art because of its subject matter, which was mainly to do with terminal illness, especially HIV. This refusal cannot really be justified, as it is not fair to expect Jones, who is himself antibody positive, to dismiss this very important part of his life and exclude it from his work. It is now time to develop new attitudes to Aids-informed art.

How indie movies lost the plot
Article Abstract:
Independent films in the US overturn the hated formulas of Hollywood, but they fail to establish any superior contact with reality. This is seen in 'Your Friends and Neighbors,' the second film from writer-director Neil LaBute, who won great acclaim for 'In the Company of Men,' his first film. It is also seen in 'Happiness,' the second film from writer-director Todd Solandz. However, independent films are still good at showing intimate relationships without romanticism or reflexive cynicism.
