Article Abstract:
The lack of good new plays means old ones such as Michael Frayn's 'Noises Off' and Emlyn William's 'The Corn Is Green' are staged over and over again. Most revivals are conventional, domestic plays which cannot be radically interpreted. Some are funny but most are predictable. Although audiences are different from tourist or classic audiences the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National also revive old plays successfully. Some producers choose a revival to examine the playwright but these plays create income for theatres as well as for playwrights.

Whose lines are they anyway?
Article Abstract:
Playwrights express their views through their plays, especially when they write about other playwrights. Plays involving playwrights may be objective but are often accused of being pretentious. Peter Shaffer is concerned about playwrights' duties: to be theatrical, to amaze and change. He thinks plays should be morally responsible and entertaining. Martin Crimp is satirical rather than moralistic. Peter Whelan enjoys feeling the same sensations as past writers when writing about them.

The trick is to start writing
Article Abstract:
It is vital that writing takes account of the body as well as the intellect, according to novelist Janice Galloway. She believes that all writing is autobiographical to a certain extent, and her works certainly reflect her own experiences. She writes in a way which makes the reader feel very involved, with her words being arranged in a way which resembles poetry, rather than prose. She also takes great care never to bore the reader in the manner of some intellectual writers.
