Lost in the translation
Article Abstract:
Mistakes made when interpreting in the courtroom can sometimes have extremely serious consequences. It is vital that interpreters provide a completely accurate translation of the court proceedings, but their role also goes beyond this. They must be able to use body language which does not intimidate the client, and must take care not to interfere in the relationship between the barrister and the client by engaging in untranslated discussions. They must also provide a translation for the court which accurately reflects the client's intentions.

Best of British
Article Abstract:
The involvement of British producer Eric Abraham was vital to the success of Czech-made film 'Kolja,' according to Jan Sverak, its Czech director. This film won the 1997 Oscar for Best Foreign Film, and has been very warmly received. It is often very hard to define a film as belonging to a particular country. 'The English Patient,' which won nine Oscars, was actually funded from US sources, while 'Fargo,' which won two Oscars, is a US film produced by UK concern Working Title and funded from the UK.

How would-be solicitors are selling themselves
Article Abstract:
Many law students are finding it very hard to obtain a placement for the two-year training programme which they must undergo in order to qualify as a solicitor. In 1994, 5,500 students qualified across the UK on the Legal Practice Course (LPC), of whom 1,700 failed to find a training position with a law firm. The situation will become worse in 1995, when more students will qualify on the LPC course. Some students are now making considerable efforts to market themselves to potential employers.
