Grieving nation brought to a halt
Article Abstract:
There has been a very strong reaction in Jordan to the death of King Hussein following unsuccessful medical treatment in the US for lymphatic cancer. The cabinet has proclaimed Crown Prince Abdullah, King Hussein's oldest son, as the new king. Ordinary Jordanians are displaying genuine grief at King Hussein's death, and most of the population of Amman, Jordan, is expected to attend the funeral. Considerable confusion has been created by a series of unexpected developments in Jordan over recent weeks, including King Hussein's decision to name Prince Abdullah, rather than his brother Hassan, as his heir.

King Hussein of Jordan
Article Abstract:
Hussein bin Talal, King of Jordan between 1952 and 1999, did not grow up surrounded by great wealth. He attended six schools in Amman, Jordan, before studying at the Victoria College in Alexandria, Egypt, and at Harrow in the UK. He attended the military academy at Sandhurst, England, for six months following his succession. He survived several attempts to remove him from power or assassinate him. He made Jordan one of the least brutal countries in the region, and gained the loyalty of his army.

Jordan waits nervously as vultures circle
Article Abstract:
World leaders paid tribute to King Hussein of Jordan at his funeral, but Jordanians are strongly aware that their country is now very vulnerable. There is great concern about the future, particularly with respect to relations with Iraq and Israel. Jordanians placed great trust in King Hussein, and this allowed him to waver between democracy and repression. However, it is not at all certain that his son, King Abdullah, will be able to risk any unpopular policies.
