Guilty: of killing courtroom drama with the cosh of scientific evidence
Article Abstract:
It has become increasingly common for major trials to involve the extensive use of scientific evidence. This trend has had a very strange effect on the dramatic nature of such trials. It has reduced court proceedings to lengthy debates which are often extremely tedious, and has removed the requirement to use gut instinct about whether a defendant is guilty or not. In the case of Louise Woodward, the British nanny who is on trial for murder in the US, defence lawyers are using highly detailed scientific evidence to sow seeds of doubt about her guilt in the minds of the jury.

Paranoia was at its height - had I been near any strange ducks recently?
Article Abstract:
Many people do not really take influenza very seriously, regarding it merely as being slightly unwell. However, those who suffer a full-blown influenza attack realize that it is in fact a very unpleasant disease. It is worth being aware that the 1918 Spanish Influenza epidemic killed more than 20 million people and that research work is still being undertaken into this epidemic's exact nature. It is believed that waterfowl acted as a reservoir for this influenza strain. Any modern influenza epidemic would spread in the same way.
