Gunboat diplomacy for the 21st century
Article Abstract:
The UK government's foreign policy objectives place considerable emphasis on the globalization of society and the need to bring about security through diplomatic measures. For this reason, it may be advisable for the government to consider strengthening the Navy. The main threat to the UK's security in the future will come from missiles with nuclear, biological or chemical warheads, and the best way of dealing with incoming missiles is shooting them down over the sea. A strong Navy will also play a key role in protecting British civilians abroad.

Britain sounds the retreat
Article Abstract:
Defence is an issue which has attracted very little attention in the run-up to the forthcoming general election in the UK. However, it will be a very important issue for the next government. Military planners are facing extremely difficult decisions, especially whether the UK should abandon its commitment to being able fight a high-intensity continental land war. The Labour party has criticised the government for reducing defence spending, but it is clear that a future Labour government would not greatly increase spending on defence.

China sees power of gunboat diplomacy
Article Abstract:
The Chinese navy appears to be relatively strong, being made up of one nuclear-powered ballistic missile firing submarine, 50 other submarines, 50 destroyers and frigates and 870 coastal and patrol craft. However, the quality of the vessels is not very good. The recent show of strength by the US Navy in the conflict between China and Taiwan is likely to prompt China to develop a much more effective navy, and it will probably begin building aircraft carriers.
