Uncertain applicants are tempted with cash
Article Abstract:
Some UK universities are responding to a shortage of applicants for certain courses by offering incentives. In some cases, universities are prepared to waive tuition fees altogether for all students, while in other cases they are offering bursaries covering the cost of tuition to certain students. Other universities have rejected the idea of offering incentives, as they feel that incentives could encourage potential students to make misguided choices. They also feel that waiving tuition fees will mean that some students subsidize others.

Sending the lecturers back to school
Article Abstract:
The Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, which is expected to be established in the UK in 1998 and officially launched on Apr 1, 1999, will act as an accrediting body for training courses for university and college lecturers. This follows growing concerns that lecturers are being forced to place a great deal of emphasis on research, with teaching standards declining as a result. Some observers have negative views about the institute, feeling that it could be too bureaucratic and that it may use up funds that could be put to better use elsewhere.
