Lamas, dramas and Chinese whispers
Article Abstract:
Chinese officials recently entered the high Tibetan plateau, where they are rarely seen, and detained six-year-old Tibetan boy Gendun Choekyi Nyima and his parents. The boy is claimed to be the reincarnation of the highly respected Tibetan spiritual leader Panchen Lama. Tibetans are now very worried about the boy's future in the hands of the Chinese authorities, as they believe that efforts will be made to mould him so that he will eventually challenge the exiled Dalai Lama, who has gained international respect for his non-violent opposition to the continued Chinese occupation of Tibet.

Waiting for a toy train by a misty mountain tea garden
Article Abstract:
The Darjeeling Himalaya Railway, a narrow-gauge track which runs high up into the mountains, often experiences delays. Monsoon rains tend to dislodge boulders which then block the track, and sometimes the railway bedding is washed away. However, the main threat to the line is the car, which reduces the journey from the plains to Darjeeling to only two-and-a-half hours, compared with up to 13 hours by rail. The route could simply become a tourist attraction if plans to close down the final stage go ahead.
