Hard. Honest. Beautiful
Article Abstract:
The formation of rugby league in 1896 when a group of Northern clubs severed links with the Rugby Football Union can be regarded as a social revolution. The Rugby Football Union regarded the breakaway clubs, which were demanding compensation for lost Saturday wages, as working-class upstarts, and sought to destroy them. It aimed for the rugby union clubs to become associated with the professional classes, while the local amateur rugby league would attract the working classes. However, many young boys were attracted to elements of both forms of rugby.

Article Abstract:
Female athletes who are not glamorous find it extremely difficult to attract sponsorship. This has been a particular problem for the UK's women golfers, who tend to look rather masculine. It is hard to avoid the fact that men often do not take women seriously as athletes, and that they pay as much attention to women athletes' appearance as to their sporting abilities. However, women athletes only gain true respect and self-esteem if they show that they have real sporting ability underneath a glamorous exterior.

In a league of their own - but for how long?
Article Abstract:
Rugby League clubs have managed to retain their traditionally strong links with their local community, even though the leading clubs are now very wealthy. There is a strong sense of belonging, and games attract many different sorts of people. It has been a professional game for many years, and this has ensured that the play is fast and exciting, in order to attract crowds. However, the growing influence of commercialism in the game may lead to it becoming detached from its community roots.
