Harsh realities of national interest
Article Abstract:
The governments of developed countries have over recent years increasingly attempted to ensure that their economic policies are in line with the concerns of the financial markets, even if they are unwilling to bow to this pressure. They have failed to accept so far that outside pressures may in fact work to protect democracy. This contrasts with the developing world, where governments have been quick to acknowledge that access to international capital and investment can promote the progress of democracy.

Market recovery is no mere swing of mood
Article Abstract:
UK share prices have seen a strong recovery since the beginning of 1995, despite the poor performance of sterling and the increase in interest rates. Share prices have traditionally been in a weak position at this stage of the economic cycle, and analysts are offering a range of explanations for their current strength. Most believe that the market is unlikely to suffer a sharp fall, and some are even predicting that share prices will reach record levels before the end of 1995.

Troubles with takeovers are clear for all to see
Article Abstract:
It is very hard to identify clear patterns for why some mergers are successful and some fail. This is because all mergers are different. However, there are a number of clear signs which indicate that a takeover will be problematic. These include deals where it is not clear which company will be in control and deals between companies of very different cultural backgrounds. Cross-border mergers are also susceptible to failure.
