More of a trial than a test. (concern about compulsory tests for 11-year-olds_
Article Abstract:
The UK's 11-year-olds have recently taken compulsory tests in English, maths and science for the first time since the abolition of the 11-plus. Once these tests have become established, they will be used to assess the performance of primary schools. Teachers are already expressing concern about the tests, claiming that some schools have cheated in order to obtain better results. They are also concerned about the tests themselves, with marking being inconsistent and standards varying between subjects.

Fights in the nursery
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party's nursery voucher scheme for four-year-olds has seen mixed success. The government claims that the scheme is cheap and easy to use, with pilot schemes having seen the creation of many new local authority, private and voluntary nursery places. However, there are also reports of the voucher scheme having negative effects. Some playgroups have been forced to shut down, and some observers claim that there is no evidence that the scheme will create new places.
