She learned calligraphy at the Chelsea School of Art, where she studied under Mervyn Oliver, who had himself been greatly influenced by Johnston. She paid great attention to words and their arrangement, an approach which had been first advocated by Johnston. She was awarded a scholarship at the Royal College of Art shortly before the second world war.
