Heavy weather for retail newcomers
Article Abstract:
The UK retail sector has seen significant share price declines. The general retail sector underperformed the FT All Share by 15.7% in the first seven months of 1998, with particular problems for smaller stocks as investors focus on FTSE 100 retailers such as Great Universal Stores and Marks & Spencer. Matalan and Monsoon, which are both new to the market, have seen little demand for their shares, which some observers regard as overpriced.

M & S trust into 1bn pounds sterling profit
Article Abstract:
Leading UK retailer Marks and Spencer achieved profits of almost 1 billion pounds sterling in 1995. It was strong sales of both clothing and food, and also witnessed a revival in demand for home furnishings, indicating that the UK housing market may soon begin to recover. The company has returned rising profits throughout the recession, in contrast to many other top retailers, and has benefited from the great strength of its brand name.
