Singer Helen Ward began singing professionally at the age of 16. She joined clarinettist Benny Goodman's newly formed band at the age of 18, and remained closely associated with him for the rest of her life. She was a musical singer, and became highly respected for her sensitive vocal style. Her voice was ideal for the big band setting, and she was popular with Goodman's musicians. She sang with Goodman on many guest appearances and recordings, especially during the 1950s.

Al Hibbler
Article Abstract:
Singer Al Hibbler was born in Little Rock, AK, in 1915. He was blind from birth, and studied voice at the Conservatory for the Blind. He worked with local bands, and then spent eight years with Duke Ellington's band.

Singer and writer Susannah McCorkle was born in Berkeley, CA, in 1946. She studied Italian literature at Berkeley and then worked as an interpreter. She began singing with a band in London, England, in 1972.
