Help for the disabled at the flick of a switch
Article Abstract:
The Computability Centre, Warwick is a charitable organisation run by IBM UK , the University of Birmingham and the British Computer Society, to answer inquiries about computers helping people with physical handicaps. Voice recognition software costs about 2000 pounds sterling, AccessDoss for wobbly fingers is free and other aids are under 500 pounds sterling; there are grants for work equipment. It is hard to get work because employers with more than 20 employees should have 3% disabled but they tend to ask for exemptions. In Europe, companies are fined so the situation is improving. Many solutions are not specifically designed for the disabled, but some lateral thinking realises possibilities. The Employers' Forum on Disability was launched in 1992.

Disk with a cast of thousands
Article Abstract:
Electronic picture libraries are increasingly available since optical disk storage reduced electronic storage costs and digital imaging improved picture quality. One example is 'Showcase' which is a directory of actors for casting directors. Broadcasting companies use 'Gallery 2000' which has four-second recall. Police authorities may use picture databases for criminal records and insurance companies can verify claims for stolen antiques with them. The Victoria and Albert Museum uses CD Rom and video discs. The Vasari laboratory system is used for scientific analysis in conservation and restoration.

A flick through the Good and Evil book
Article Abstract:
Clint Eastwood is directing a film version of John Berendt's 1994 book 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.' This book, a combination of a true crime thriller and a travelogue, is based in Savannah, GA. The descriptions of Savannah, GA, in the book are not always necessarily accurate, but visitors to the town can recognize a number of different settings from the book. The relaxed atmosphere of the town is also fully reflected in the book. This is also the case with Eastwood's film.
