X-ray eye on the invisible Universe
Article Abstract:
The Chandra X-ray telescope, which is being placed in position in its 'parking orbit' around Earth by the 94th Shuttle mission, has two sets of mirrors. Its high-tech instruments will permit scientists to analyze X-ray sources 20 times weaker than those seen by previous observatories. It will orbit one-third of the way to the Moon, and it will thus be possible to use it continuously for 55 hours out of each 64-hour circuit.

Encounter with a distant stranger
Article Abstract:
The planet Pluto is usually the farthest planet from the Sun, but for 20 years every 240 years it comes inside the orbit of Neptune, and during this period is the eighth planet from the Sun. Scientists are keen to make use of this time, which will end in 1999, to increase their knowledge of Pluto. The planet presents particular problems because it is only 2,300km across and because it is so far away.
