History bears a lesson
Article Abstract:
World stock markets are seen as continually rising, and market conditions have changed, many people believe. Such a belief could be dangerous since expectations of corporate profits maybe unrealistic. Growth in gross domestic product affects corporate profits, which in turn affect stock prices. Stocks do not always perform well over the long term, and have not done so in Japan after the collapse of the 1989 bubble. US long treasury bonds and Japanese equities may offer investment opportunities.

Ways to make your savings crash-proof
Article Abstract:
Investors may wish to protect their savings against stock price falls after drops in stock prices in late Oct 1997. Investors who have retained stocks for a year have still seen a net price rise higher then returns from deposit accounts, despite the price falls of Oct. Regular investors benefit from being able to buy more stocks when prics drop. Lump sum investors may prefer to wait if they foresee stock price falls, and invest once the market appears to have stabilized.
