Article Abstract:

The UK's Opportunity 2000 campaign, launched in 1991, has sought to enlist the assistance of business in improving conditions for women at work. Companies joining Opportunity 2000 are obliged to show a commitment to the campaign at top management level, to assess the position of women in their workforce, to set targets for recruiting and to regularly monitor their progress in this area. The campaign has made some significant achievements, although there is still considerable progress to be made before the UK can boast of having a truly balanced workforce.

The bosses who know that women mean business

Article Abstract:

A top 50 list of UK employers was compiled, based on their general equal opportunities policies and more specific criteria such as creche facilities, jobshare, flexible hours and career breaks. Women who operate a jobshare claim the employer benefits from two people's time, energy and ideas. The National Health Service is striving to improve conditions for its women workers. Employers are becoming aware that giving women equal opportunities is cost-effective.
