Hit-and-run attack on the public
Article Abstract:
The UK Law Commission has proposed that the National Health Service should sue for the costs of treating accident victims, in the same way as a private medical insurer will sue a car insurance company if one of the latter's policyholders causes an accident which injures one of the former's policyholders. This approach could theoretically be taken a lot further, with many different people being obliged to take financial responsibility for the risks they deliberately take. This view is supported by academics David Halpern and Stuart White, writing for the on-line thinktank NEXUS.

Consistent growth may not be enough for voters
Article Abstract:
It has been traditionally believed in the UK that a government which is responsible for economic growth will be successful at the next general election. However, this may no longer be the case. The UK economy has grown steadily but at relatively low levels over the last three years, and there has been no particularly strong area of performance to attract voters' attention. It is also possible that voters will reject the Conservative party simply because it has been in power for too long.

Taiwan can't give everyone a job
Article Abstract:
Recent investment by Taiwanese and Japanese companies has created many new jobs in the UK. The deregulated labour market is likely to continue to attract foreign investment and produce new jobs. However, this will have only a marginal impact on unemployment, as large numbers of jobs continue to be lost. There are particular problems in the manufacturing sector, where 200,000 jobs have been lost over the last three years.
