Self-belief is no defence for ministers
Article Abstract:
The recently published Scott report was critical of the role of Attorney-General Sir Nicholas Lyell, especially of his behaviour over the use of Public Interest Immunity Certificates. However, he has retained the support of Cabinet ministers, and does not feel the need to apologise. He is not corrupt, or guilty of conspiracy, but he is certainly the victim of a system which expects people in his sort of position to order ministers to conceal important information. Such as system is not in the interest of ordinary people or of justice.

Why Paddy can spend, spend, spend
Article Abstract:
Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown has made a strong plea for political reform at the party's annual conference. His speech was deliberately extreme, criticising centralist politics which have, in his view, caused many problems for the UK's political system. He no longer feels the need to adopt a careful neutral stance between the Conservative and Labour parties, and will certainly be a strong force in any future Labour government. He has criticised both parties for failing to tell the truth about the need to increase taxes.
