Home from Holmes
Article Abstract:
The 1998 Sherlock Holmes Festival is to be held in Crowborough, England, where author Conan Doyle lived for the last 23 years of his life. The festival is expected to attract around 25,000 Sherlock Holmes fans, who will be keen to visit the places with which Doyle had close links. Windlesham Manor, to which he moved in 1907, is now a nursing home, but Groombridge Place, which Doyle knew well, is still much as it would have been when he knew it. Events at the festival will include a Holmes/Watson Billiard tournament and a Hound of the Baskerville Dog Show.

The ch-ch-ch-changing face of Ziggy's Beckenham
Article Abstract:
Rock star David Bowie grew up in Beckenham, a southern suburb of London, England. Beckenham is a nondescript, rather unattractive place, and Bowie generally did not care to be associated with it, feeling that it did not blend in well with his rebel image. Visitors to Beckenham can still see the pub where he used to organize Sunday night folk sessions and the Gothic Victorian villa where he lived between having his first hit single and becoming a fully recognized rock star.

In the playground of Casanova
Article Abstract:
The city of Venice, Italy, is marking the 200th anniversary of the death of Casanova with events including a large exhibition dedicated to his memory in Sep 1998. Visitors to the city can still see a number of places associated with Casanova, including Rialto Do Spade, a very small bar that has been in Calle do Spade since 1475, and the cafes of Piazza San Marco. It is possible to take a guided tour to see the cell in the Ducal Palace where he was imprisoned in 1755.
