Home truths from the hospital
Article Abstract:
The UK Department of Health's report on childbirth, 'Changing Childbirth' published on Aug 5, 1993 recommends that women should have a choice whether to give birth in hospital or at home. Efficient midwife facilities are needed for the recommendations to work, as childbirth risks are high. The report recommends that 1 midwife should be allocated to each pregnant woman facilitating more personal care. Twenty-two per cent of women in the report want to give birth at home. They should be made fully aware of risks. The lack of resuscitation equipment during home births is a high risk factor.
