Hooked on modernists
Article Abstract:
It is important to encourage new repertoire, taking pieces from one country and introducing them to another, according to Irvine Arditti, founder of the Arditti String Quartet. He welcomes the fact that young composers now feel much more free to develop their own style. He is also pleased that the quartet's interest in new music is no longer questioned as much as it used to be. He feels that the quartet's aim is to play a role in continuing the tradition of string quartet composing from the later years of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century.

A mere three score and ten
Article Abstract:
It is important to foster close working relationships between the London Philharmonic and leading music colleges, according to conductor Kurt Masur, who will be in full office as this orchestra's conductor from the 2000 to 2001 season. He would also like to try holding rush-hour concerts, which have proved popular in New York, NY, where he has served as the Philharmonic's music director since 1991. He is also considering ways of bringing music and literature together.
