Hospital at centre of cancer scare faces multi-million pound lawsuits
Article Abstract:
St George's Hospital in Tooting, London, England, is anticipating that some of the women who were incorrectly treated at its colposcopy unit will take legal action. It has expressed deep regret at its failure to deal properly with women who were being investigated at the colposcopy unit following abnormal cervical smear test results. The cases of 5,000 women have been reviewed, and it has been established that 19 women developed cancer. In 12 of these cases, the care given by the hospital was unacceptable or there was cause for concern.

The big three
Article Abstract:
The most common forms of cancer in the UK are breast, lung and prostate cancer. Breast cancer affects one in 12 women, and is diagnosed in more than 34,000 women each year. Family history is a significant risk factor, as is age. Prostate cancer is now the second most common cause of deaths from cancer among men, but there is still uncertainty about risk factors. Lung cancer is the most common form of cancer in men, and mainly affects smokers. It is a very aggressive cancer, and can be very hard to treat.

Hospital guilty of fatal smear test blunders
Article Abstract:
An independent inquiry into the screening process for cervical cancer at Kent and Canterbury Hospitals NHS Trust has revealed a range of problems, including understaffing, inadequate training and poor management. It was necessary to recall 91,000 women for screening. Of these, 1,800 were found to have signs of problems relating to cervical cancer, even though their test results had been passed as clear. The inquiry is likely to prompt a review of cervical smear testing in the UK as a whole.
