The patient art of interpretation
Article Abstract:
National identity plays a key role in music, according to Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes. For this reason, he is concerned about the process of musical 'homogenisation' which is currently taking place. He believes that an interpretation of a piece must mature over a considerable period of time, and this leads him to read pieces in a very individual way. The fact that he was brought up on a remote island has lent a strong element of stillness and concentration to his playing.

Personality - by design
Article Abstract:
The secret to great piano playing is relating sound to style and style to sound, according to pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. He is aware that this process is working when he is no longer conscious of it. He believes that recordings should only be made where there is a strong creative imperative, and is keen to make recordings which are interesting, rather than perfect. He is happiest when doing live performances, as he greatly enjoys a audience and a sense of occasion.

A piano-player's life begins at forte
Article Abstract:
Developing an interest in the modern concert grand piano has been a natural progression, according to Melvyn Tan, who has for many years been closely associated with the fortepiano. He has now come to acknowledge that the modern piano gives a great deal of freedom, and feels that he can relax more when playing the modern piano. However, he also remains firmly committed to the fortepiano.
