How Jack Straw, vigilant censor of MI5 revelations, left an informer out to dry
Article Abstract:
The case of Martin McGartland, who spied for the RUC Special Branch and saved many lives, has attracted considerable controversy. He has been living since the early 1990s under an assumed identity in order to protect him from the IRA, but his true identity was revealed because he was forced to stand trial for having two driving licences in the same name. Home Secretary Jack Straw believes that McGartland is in no immediate danger, even though his younger brother has already been attacked by the IRA.

House of the future? Straw, bamboo and cybertronics
Article Abstract:
Some architects are beginning to acknowledge that traditional materials, such as hay, bamboo and reeds, can play a valuable role in modern house design. A reed bed in the garden can filter used water, for example, while hay makes an excellent insulation material. However, houses of the future will also make use of latest electronic technology. It will be possible to use electronics for tasks such as switching on lights, opening doors and switching on appliances.
