How far must we go for a cure?
Article Abstract:
There have been several cases recently in which the Department of Health has allowed the funding of treatment abroad for patients suffering from conditions for which there is no treatment available in the UK. This gives the impression that the UK is no longer at the forefront of medical innovation. However, some observers believe that this is not the case. The UK in fact has all the necessary facilities to treat these conditions, but not combined at a single centre, thus making treatment very difficult. Furthermore, American doctors tend to take risks which are avoided by their counterparts in the UK.
