How far will the mutant flies go?
Article Abstract:
Bryan Shorrock, professor of population biology at Leeds University, is researching the effect of genetically altered species on the environment. Ecologists and molecular biologists have reconstructed a natural ecosystem in the laboratory in cages to conduct experiments with fruit flies. Each cage has about 30,000 flies fed on grapes. The Drosophila melanogaster is the invading species. The three-year study, begun in 1991, is investigating whether genes spread from one species to another and whether genetically altered fruit flies affect the ecosystem differently. The results would be used to legislate if the government sanctioned the introduction of modified organisms.

It takes more than ice to achieve immortality
Article Abstract:
There are a number of significant difficulties associated with storing mammalian tissues at low temperatures so that they are still functional when they are warmed up again. Work on this subject is being undertaken at the medical cryobiology unit at York University, England, where projects include finding a way to cryopreserve the cornea. It has already been possible to prove that small arteries for use in bypass surgery can be cryopreserved. Researchers are also set to test a new technique for preserving cartilage.

Stars in their ions
Article Abstract:
The selected ion flow tube, invented in the early 1970s, has formed the basis for a breathalyzer developed at Keele University, England. This equipment is able to identify extremely small amounts of volatile chemicals on human breath, and could have applications in diagnosing many different diseases.
