How my baby joined the beat generation
Article Abstract:
'Prenatal learning' programmes, which expose the unborn baby to heartbeat-like sounds and are intended to maximise the child's intellectual potential, are very popular in the US, and are now starting to enter the UK too. These programmes are designed to make use of the around 50% of all foetal brain cells which atrophy before the moment of birth, giving the child an 'enhanced mental architecture.' Parents who have used these programmes sometimes report that the child has a very good attention span and begin talking very early.

Who's left holding the baby?
Article Abstract:
Single parents comprise 70% mature men and women who were married and have divorced, separated or been widowed and 30% young single mothers. Although about 8,000 teenagers become pregnant every year, the fastest-growing group of single parents is those aged 20-24. Only 45,000 of the 845,000 lone parents living on Income Support are 16- to 19-year-olds. Most would prefer to work when the children were old enough or if they could get child-care support. Fathers who desert these families are often unemployed.
