Maternity leave worst in Europe
Article Abstract:
UK firms are the least generous in Europe regarding maternity leave, according to a survey by the UK-based general workers' union GMB. Female workers in the UK taking maternity leave are given the equivalent of 8.6 weeks' full pay, compared with 47.7 weeks in Austria, 42 weeks in Sweden and 31 weeks in Germany. The union studied paid parental leave and maternity pay in 16 European countries and found the UK to be the worst, offering an outdated and sterile system which punishes those wanting children.

You ask the questions
Article Abstract:
Broadcaster John Peel would rather be liked than disliked, although he admits that he sometimes behaves rather strangely. He does not regard himself as discovering bands, but is quite proud of having played a role in making people aware of Captain Beefheart. He has particularly enjoyed the music of The Fall, but regards Captain Beefheart's 'Trout Mask Replica' as the most innovative album of all time. He hopes to be able to read more books and see more films in 1999.
