How my beautiful daughter was destroyed by mad cow disease
Article Abstract:
The inquiry into the causes of BSE has heard evidence from Roger Tomkins, whose daughter Clare was diagnosed as having new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (v-CJD) in Aug 1997. Tomkins told how v-CJD has left his daughter bed-bound and clinically blind. She was initially believed to be suffering from a psychiatric condition, and it took some time for her family to convince medical professionals that this was not the case. She now requires 24-hour care, and it is uncertain how long she will survive.

A flash of blue light, and Japan is forced to confront a nuclear nightmare once more
Article Abstract:
At least 19 staff at the JCO uranium reprocessing plant in Tokaimura, Japan, have been seriously exposed to radiation following a nuclear chain reaction in a tank of enriched uranium. The plant has now been evacuated, as have nearby homes. No workers at the plant stopped the reaction before leaving, and it is almost definitely continuing. Stopping it will now be a very complex process. Japan relies heavily on nuclear power, and has been lucky to avoid such a serious accident so far.

A 54,000 pounds sterling telephone bill? You've been phreaked!
Article Abstract:
It is believed that 38% of UK companies now have voice-mail systems, with sales reaching 61.5 million pounds sterling in 1994. These are based on automated switchboards which have attracted considerable attention from telephone hackers. They have found that it is possible to guess the code number of the owner of the voice-mail 'box,' then diallling out to an extension and from there to anywhere in the world. This has led to extremely high telephone bills for some companies.
