Heads you win, tails you win
Article Abstract:
It has become increasingly common for UK companies to make very large pay-offs to executives whom they wish to dismiss. A pay-off of 500,000 pounds sterling is now typical for a chief executive, and it is not uncommon for a pay-off to exceed 1 million pounds sterling. Some observers believe that this trend has been prompted by the fact that the rewards for success have become greater and the dangers presented by failure more clear. Being a chairman or chief executive of a leading UK company is a much less secure position than it used to be.

Triumph of skill and a 40m pounds sterling gamble

It believes that it will break even for the first time in 1995, and expects strong sales of the 900cc Adventurer, its latest model. The company is the only significant motorbike manufacturer left in the UK, and it must do well if the industry is to remain alive.
