How the Republicans can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat
Article Abstract:
The outcome of recent elections in the US indicates that the Democrats are still able to hold firm against the Republicans, despite the pressure created by the problems facing President Bill Clinton. However, the Republicans were partly responsible for their own defeat. In particular, leading Republican Newt Gingrich is very unpopular. The Republican party itself is divided, and it comes across as lacking genuine commitment. If the Republicans fail to settle their differences quickly, then it is likely that the Democrats will win in 2000 as well.

Article Abstract:
Issues that have dominated national politics in the US since the late 1980s, such as the economy, taxation, crime and immigration, were mainly absent from campaigning for the elections held on Nov 3, 1998. In particular, both voters and politicians shunned discussion of President Bill Clinton's fitness for office. There were indications of the emergence of new issues that could come to dominate the national political scene in the future. These include party funding, ethics, social inclusion, gambling, drugs and the environment.
