How to beat the rail strike
Article Abstract:
One in five of the UK working population already spends at least part of the week working at home, according to British Telecom. By 1996, it is likely that as many as 2.25 million people will be working from home at least three days a week, and this could reach 5 million by the end of the 1990s. Employers are now beginning to accept that people who work from home are up to 20% more productive than those in the office, and the development of high-tech interactive equipment is making teleworking increasingly feasible. However, there are also known to be disadvantages, particularly with teleworkers suffering from loneliness and tending to overwork.

Tunnel of gloom for rail freight
Article Abstract:
The Channel Tunnel may transport far less rail freight than the expected 6.5 million tonnes by 1995. British Rail wishes to use only 27 of the 200 train paths available each day for freight. Prices are so high that it is cheaper to use a railhead in Calais than one in Manchester or Glasgow. Scheduling only allows one train a day and intermodal containers are specified, which are unpopular after the collapse of Charterail. Concern about rail privatisation deters freight hauliers.

Escape from chock-a-block Car City
Article Abstract:
Car-free areas in cities and large towns seem very attractive, creating a cleaner, quieter environment. Small shops would benefit as people no longer drive to large supermarkets, and pollution would be reduced. However, such areas would only be really effective if the local residents had access to all necessary facilities, such as schools and healthcare, within walking or cycling distance.
