Battle of the crowded cabbies
Article Abstract:
Since the London Taxi Board requested extra suburban licences in 1990 because numbers were dropping in the suburbs, the number of taxis has increased ahead of trade. The Public Carriage Office licences new London taxi-drivers according to Department of Transport (DoT) terms. The Licensed Taxi Drivers' Association requested a temporary halt to new licences as the earnings of the 22,000 licensed drivers dropped by 25% during 1991/2. The DoT refused because of the needs of the public. The London Taxi Board sugested a uniform system for minicabs and black cabs.

Sale reaches fever pitch
Article Abstract:
The pace of privatisations is slowing down in the UK, but is still speeding up in other countries. Indeed, some $200 billion of state assets are likely to be sold in Europe and $100 billion in the rest of the world over the next five years. Some private investors may choose to purchase privatisation shares directly, and will have many issues to choose from, especially in Europe. Others may prefer to take the less risky option of investing in privatisations through a diversified fund.

Degrees of cover at a price
Article Abstract:
Many people in the UK are concerned about the level of service provided by the National Health Service (NHS), but concern about their financial future is preventing them from taking out private medical insurance. Around 6.4 million people currently have private medical insurance cover, but the market has not really grown since the early 1990s. There are many new providers in the sector, and they are trying to attract business by offering new services.
