How to find the best travelling companion
Article Abstract:
There is a wide variety of portable and laptop computers on the market and six important factors to be considered when choosing one, namely weight, size, keyboard, display, battery life and computing performance. A 386SX is suitable for most jobs likely to be done on a portable and a 40 megabyte drive should be adequate with up to two megabytes of RAM. Battery life is still a problem and is the one area where technical progress is slow. If Microsoft Windows is required more disc and RAM capacity will be needed. The use of a mouse is also a problem on the train or in a similar environment so the use of a tracker ball by Apple is a boon.

3Com's new weapon in the battle for a big little market
Article Abstract:
3Com's new Palm III, an upgraded version of the Palm Pilot, has many of the features of its predecessor, although its shape has changed. However, memory has been increased, and the operating system has been adjusted to give a better menu structure and improved communications. It is possible to argue that the Palm III does not really make adequate use of its technology and marketing opportunities, such as infrared function. Furthermore, it would have been better to overhaul the application software.

1998: The rise of the new dictator?
Article Abstract:
PCs are becoming increasingly powerful, and by the end of 1998 it will be possible to purchase a 32 Mbyte to 64 Mbyte machine with a 5 Gbyte to 7 Gbyte hard disk for only around 1,500 pounds sterling. As they are becoming more powerful, PCs are also getting smaller. There is now a growing market for handheld computers, and there is also increasing interest in related technology such as speech recognition. The traditional portable computer will also grow in popularity in 1998.
