How to lead a nation by the Nose
Article Abstract:
Some observers have expressed reservations about the 1995 Red Nose Day, being held on Mar 17. They believe that the event, part of the Comic Relief charity fund-raising event, has become rather boring and that it is no longer as effective as it originally was in raising money. Donations on the last Red Nose Day, Mar 12, 1993, were 18 million pounds sterling, down from 27 million pounds sterling in 1989, but that it still a great deal of money which can be used in many charitable projects.

Leading her husband by the nose
Article Abstract:
Christine Hamilton, the wife of Conservative MP Neil Hamilton, has always played a significant role in his career. She acts as his House of Commons secretary and is often present when he is interviewed. She has had a particularly high profile since it was alleged that he accepted payment for asking parliamentary questions. She has totally dedicated herself to her husband's career, having had no children, and has not been afraid to deal with very difficult situations.

John Major has set himself the most impossible task of his career. Not peace in Northern Ireland, not even winning an election. No, he has exhorted the nation that tonight, at 8.38pm, we should all fall silent and remain so for two minutes to mark VE Day. Silence. For two whole minutes. Can this man be serious?
Article Abstract:
Silence has become very rare in modern life, and people now tend to feel uncomfortable when there is no noise. It is no longer very common to observe a minute's silence for the dead, as the growing focus on individualism has led to a loss of the shared sense of values on which such ceremonies used to be based. Silence can only really exist against the background of right relationships and a sense of balanced priorities.
