An author describes the difficulty he had researching his book 'Paper Tigers' about newspaper tycoons as they dislike being interviewed and little is printed about them. They move around their international offices so frequently that letters rarely catch up with them. He travelled across the world at short notice to interview those who gave permission. It was three years before some of the 30 owners agreed. Once interviewed they wanted to know who else had been seen and suggested excluding rivals.

Under his new group name, Facia, a number of acquisitions have been made, including Sock Shop, Oakland menswear and Torq the jewellers. He hopes that his group will become a strong player in the accessories market. At present, it operates 530 shops and has sales of more than 200 million pounds sterling a year.
