Jilly Cooper began her writing career by writing an amusing column for the Sunday Times in 1969. She was born in 1937; her father was a brigadier. She was educated at boarding school and had several short-term jobs before becoming a housewife and mother of two. In 1982 she moved to the Mail on Sunday. In 1986 she began fiction writing full time. Her early novels were romances but the subsequent 'Riders,' 'Rivals,' and 'Polo' were best-sellers. Jilly lives mainly in the country but regularly stays in her Fulham, London house.

Sir Terence Conran, 61, who built up and lost the Habitat chain, opened Quaglino's restaurant in St James's, London, England. It seats 420 and has 187 staff. The front staff are mainly French and the majority of the 60 chefs are British. Conran's dream development of Butler's Wharf, Docklands went into receivership in Dec 1990. He has a Conran shop in London and in Paris, an architectural company, six London restaurants and is chairman of the Design Museum.
