'If a kid has a guitar in his hand, it means he don't have a gun in his hand.' (area south of Memphis, TN)(travelling the Mississippi River)(Time Off)
Article Abstract:
The flat region which runs south from Memphis, TN, to the Civil War battle site at Vicksburg, MS, was the birthplace of Blues music. Many local people regard the Mississippi River as a spiritual being, and also have considerable respect for it. The region is one of great poverty, and Blues music is often the only positive thing in life for poor black people. Blues music can be a way of ensuring that young black people avoid a life of crime.
