If you're homeless or in jail, you probably grew up in care
Article Abstract:
People who were bought up in local authority homes or with foster families account for a significant proportion of those who are living on the streets or in short-term accommodation in the UK. They also represent a significant proportion of the prison population. The government has issued many different instructions about how children in local authority homes or foster care should be treated, but these are often disregarded. This is partly because of the extremely diffuse nature of the care system. Furthermore, sexual abuse seems to be a serious and widespread problem in children's homes.

Porn, violence and what the public wants
Article Abstract:
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) regards public meetings as playing a key role in informing people about its classification system and ensuring that it is publicly accountable for its decisions. Public meetings address issues such as whether the BBFC is vulnerable to commercial pressure and whether it uses different criteria for judging foreign films from those used for UK-made films. The meetings have also played a valuable role in highlighting the very different attitudes to violence on screen as compared with explicit sex.

Is Bart's saved?
Article Abstract:
It now seems likely that St Bartholomew's Hospital in London, England, the oldest hospital in the country, will not now close, as had been planned by the government in 1992. The campaign to save the hospital has been extremely popular, probably because of its very long history. It is this background which has saved it, especially as it has retained the social mission on which it was first founded, having no private wing or private beds.
