'I'm dying tomorrow, please clear my name.' (James Hanratty, executed for murder in 1962, likely to have been innocent)
Article Abstract:
The case against James Hanratty, who was executed in 1962 for murdering a married man and raping and seriously injuring the man's lover, was weak. However, the Home Office has only recently begun to acknowledge that a miscarriage of justice could have taken place, despite extensive campaigning in support of Hanratty by his family and friends. It is expected that the case will shortly be referred to the Court of Appeal, where the conviction is likely to be quashed.

Revealed: the secret lives of witnesses
Article Abstract:
Police witness protection schemes in the United Kingdom have been examined by researchers from Strathclyde University, Scotland. They have discovered that witnesses face high levels of violence including murder attempts. Witnesses moved to new homes are unable to contact family and friends and do not receive cash rewards. This lack of contact can be a particular hardship, though moving to new homes is often seen as the only way that witnesses could stay alive.
