Article Abstract:
The UK's new Labour government is placing considerable emphasis on regional economic development. Its plans include new regional development agencies and chambers elected by councils which may in the long term become full scale elected assemblies. However, it can be argued that this is a misguided approach. The south-west of England, for example, certainly does not need more intervention from central government. It is more important to ensure full cooperation within the region, as no central government regional development policy will be successful if this cannot be achieved.

The more we alter, the less we seem to change
Article Abstract:
There has been remarkably little change in social attitudes in the UK over recent generations. This is reflected in the findings contained in the most recent annual British Social Attitudes report. Ordinary people were extensively exposed to efforts to change society under the successive governments of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, but it is clear that this era has had little long-term impact. In general, Britons remain social democratic and collectivist, regardless of the political influences to which they are exposed.

From our own 500 correspondents
Article Abstract:
The BBC is generally careful to disguise exactly how many political staff it employs. The true level of employment in this sector only really becomes visible during the annual party conference season, when several hundred BBC political staff are involved. The BBC News and Current Affairs operation is known to employ 1,100 journalists, along with at least 750 studio managers and technical staff and 600 managers and assistants. It is time that the BBC informed licence-fee payers more fully about expenditure in this area.
