Part of a wider split
Article Abstract:
The announcement that former South African President F.W. de Klerk is to divorce his wife Marike after 39 years of marriage has come as a great shock to Afrikaners. They had come to regard this marriage as a supreme example of loyalty and traditional family values. The failure of the marriage has been interpreted by some observers as a reflection of more flexible social attitudes in the post-apartheid era. However, most South African politicians are very keen to draw a distinction between personal issues and political ones.

Enter the invisible man
Article Abstract:
The recent announcement of a possible connection between BSE in animals and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) in humans could have a very negative impact on the political career of Stephen Dorrell, the secretary of state for health. Until then, he had enjoyed relative success, but he has now been placed in a very difficult position. He has not handled the crisis very well, having failed to address people's main concerns. However, his supporters regard this as simply a reflection of his preference for understatement.

Gangs take over the drug-flooded Flats of South Africa
Article Abstract:
There is now open warfare between gangsters and the Muslim vigilante group Pagad in Cape Flats, the area of Cape Town, South Africa, inhabited by poor coloureds. The gangsters have brought drugs to the area in large volumes, and the conflict has started to affect many innocent people. The government has been unable to contain the violence, which is now posing a threat to South Africa's growing tourist industry. Ministers are refusing publicly to negotiate with the gangsters, but talks are being held in secret.
