Do the levellers know how the land lies?
Article Abstract:
The new The Land is Ours environmental protest movement has wide-ranging and utopian aims. Its main demand is for freer access to the countryside, with all uncultivated and set-aside land being available for people to walk or camp on. They are also against planning laws, believing that local people should hae more control over development. This seems a reasonable view, but may have some disadvantages, especially if there is strong local opposition to a particular development.

A government divorced from reality
Article Abstract:
The UK government has reacted to growing concern about moral decay in society by establishing a new fund to support projects aimed at preventing marriage breakdown. Divorce currently costs the government 4 billion pounds sterling a year, but the government seems unprepared to invest the substantial funds which are really required to reduce the divorce rate. Indeed, it is believed that the new fund does not exceed 500,000 pounds sterling.

Vision for a one-eyed government
Article Abstract:
Women find it very hard to carve out a career in politics because they often lack the support which male politicians take for granted. Only 9% of MPs are female, and they report that the House of Commons can be very unwelcoming. The Labour party has tried to improve the balance by introducing a system of quotas in candidate selection, but there is growing feeling against this from ordinary party members.
