Debswana Diamond Co, a 50/50 venture of the Botswanan government and De Beers, is the largest employer in the country, with a workforce of almost 6,000. It is looking to boost Botswana's position as the largest diamond producer in the world. It is investing almost $300 million in the period to 2001 at its Orapa mine, where capacity will double to around 12 million carats a year. Total output at the company's two other mines is currently around 11.5 million carats a year. It is planning to privatize non-core businesses and develop citizen-owned concerns.

Sales of diamonds have increased in the UK as people stop regarding diamonds as being only for the extremely wealthy. More young women are buying diamonds for themselves, and men are also increasingly wearing diamonds. However, established suppliers such as De Beers are facing growing competition from high quality synthetic diamonds.

The discovery of a pink diamond in the upper reaches of the Rio Abaete in Minas Gerais, Brazil, in May 1999 is discussed. The eventual fate of the diamond is not known.
