Industrial stocks steal the limelight
Article Abstract:
There has been strong investor interest in industrial blue chip stocks in the UK since the beginning of Apr 1999. In contrast, share values for growth stocks such as information technology have slumped. This trend is partly the result of investors becoming nervous about the valuations attached to high-technology stocks, especially US Internet stocks. It is also partly attributable to a shift in risk perceptions, with investors now feeling that the prospects for cyclical sectors will be better than previously anticipated.

Brazil bows to IMF pressure
Article Abstract:
Brazil has introduced a $24 billion austerity programme which will reduce its budget deficit by nearly 50%. The plan should encourage the International Monetary Fund to form a $30 billion bail-out deal with Brazil. Brazil's economy will suffer serious decline if the austerity programme fails, as the currency could potentially collapse. Concerns are growing that the country may default on debt payments, with the government having used foreign exchange reserves to defend the currency.
