Intensive care
Article Abstract:
Simon Gray is a playwright whose 'Intensive Care' is being shown in the West End of London, England. Gray's brother died before the play was written, and he himself was misdiagnosed with cancer and was hospitalized with an alcohol-related complaint which his brother had also died from. He tried to write a play based on the true story of a couple who had made a pact that one would end the other's life if they went into a coma. The wife then became comatose and the husband sought to end the situation, but she revived. The play instead deals with a husband who seeks to continue his marriage though his wife is in a coma.

Assailing the centuries
Article Abstract:
'A Jovial Crew', written in 1641 by Richard Brome, has been adapted by contemporary dramatist, Stephen Jeffreys and opens on Apr 21 1992 at the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon. Max Stafford-Clark directs the large cast in the comedy involving beggars looking for ways to escape realities of a difficult world. The play was originally produced when an order of Parliament suppressed theatres in 1642. It depicts a beggar-Utopian society, ultimately implying a real world where civil unrest threatens. The adaptation develops the beggars' life more completely, enlarging the scope of the original.

By republican appointment
Article Abstract:
There have been a number of plays recently in the UK which are distinctly Republican in tone. These include 'Divine Right,' a stage play by Peter Whelan which is to open shortly. However, this play actually uses a royal character to promote the cause of Republicanism, following the example of Sue Townsend's play 'The Queen and I.' Royalty is also shortly to be portrayed in Royal National Theatre's staging of Tony Harrison's 'The Prince's Play.'
