Into the half-hidden world of Persia
Article Abstract:
Visitors to Iran will find that warm hospitality is a key element of the country's culture. Many of Iran's private houses look poorly maintained, as the economy is weak, but there are still attractive ancient palaces and mosques. It is particularly worth visiting Shiraz, Iran, which is known for its appreciation of fine food, and Isfahan, Iran, where there is strong emphasis on crafts. It is still possible to sense the essence of Persia, even though high-rise buildings are starting to dominate the landscape.

Released from solitary confinement
Article Abstract:
Robben Island, where South African President Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, has become a national monument. It is to be transformed into a national museum, with this process due to be completed in 2004. Visitors to the island find that there is still a prison atmosphere, and they gain an insight into how apartheid's discrimination was applied in prison. It is also possible to visit the quarry where Mandela and other ANC leaders worked the limestone between 1965 and 1977.
